On a bright Saturday morning at the Children's Park in Dolphin Estate, Ikoyi, something remarkable happened. Over 120 community members—mothers, fathers, grandparents, and young adults—gathered for free comprehensive eye screenings, many experiencing professional eye care for the first time in years. What made this event even more special? It was coordinated entirely by young volunteers from AYVI's Growth Cadre program, proving once again that when youth are equipped with skills and given platforms to serve, extraordinary impact follows.
Event Overview
The January 31st Community Eye Screening Outreach brought together multiple sectors to address a critical healthcare need. AYVI (Advancing Youth Voice Initiative) partnered with Skipper Eye-Q Hospital, Dolphin Estate Association (DEA), Nigerian Bottling Company, and Rotary Club, Ikoyi, to create a day of accessible, quality eye care for the Ikoyi community.
From 1.00 PM to 5.00 PM, the Children's Park transformed into a bustling health hub. Medical professionals from Skipper Eye-Q Hospital conducted thorough screenings using state-of-the-art equipment while AYVI volunteers managed registration, coordinated logistics, and ensured every participant felt welcomed and cared for. NBC provided refreshments throughout the event, creating a comfortable atmosphere where healthcare and hospitality met.
The turnout exceeded expectations. Families arrived together, neighbors brought neighbors, and word spread quickly through the estate. By day's end, more than 80 screenings had been completed, diagnoses made, and countless lives touched by a simple but powerful act of community service.

Event Highlights
Medical Impact
The professional team from Skipper Eye-Q Hospital provided comprehensive eye examinations that typically cost thousands of naira—completely free of charge. Participants received:
Complete eye health assessments, including vision testing and diagnostic screenings
Immediate diagnosis of common conditions like presbyopia, myopia, and astigmatism
Medical referrals for conditions requiring specialized treatment
50% ongoing discount at all Skipper Eye-Q locations for follow-up care and future needs
Many participants discovered eye conditions they didn't know they had, while others received immediate solutions to vision problems that had affected their daily lives for years.

Youth Leadership in Action
Twenty-five AYVI Growth Cadre volunteers coordinated every operational aspect of the event, demonstrating the effectiveness of our knowledge multiplication model. These young leaders—many of whom had attended their first leadership workshop just weeks earlier—managed:
Partner coordination with corporate sponsors and medical providers
Community mobilization and outreach across Dolphin Estate
Registration and logistics for 120+ participants
Real-time problem-solving throughout the four-hour event
Documentation and impact assessment for stakeholders
This wasn't volunteer work in the traditional sense. It was leadership development through authentic community service, where theory met practice and young people discovered their capacity to create meaningful change.

Community Atmosphere
Beyond the medical services, the event created space for community connection. NBC's refreshment station became a gathering point where participants shared stories, families relaxed between screenings, and a genuine sense of neighborhood solidarity emerged. The event reminded everyone present that healthcare is about more than treating conditions—it's about caring for people with dignity and warmth.

Partnership Impact
This outreach demonstrated the power of multi-sector collaboration for community good.
Skipper Eye-Q Hospital: Medical Excellence
As an international eye care provider with locations across Nigeria (Abuja, Lagos, Port Harcourt), Skipper Eye-Q brought world-class expertise to communities. Their team of optometrists and ophthalmologists didn't just provide screenings—they created relationships, taking time to explain conditions, answer questions, and ensure every participant understood their eye health.
The partnership extends beyond this single event. All participants received a 50% discount card for future services at any Skipper Eye-Q location, transforming this one-day outreach into ongoing healthcare access for the entire AYVI community.
Nigerian Bottling Company (NBC): Community Hospitality
NBC's support went beyond corporate sponsorship. By providing refreshments for all 200+ participants, they ensured community members could stay at the event for hours, which was crucial for thorough medical care that can't be rushed. Their contribution created an atmosphere of genuine care, where people felt valued, not processed.
In their follow-up communication, NBC emphasized the importance of initiatives that deliver real community impact and expressed interest in future collaborations that demonstrate measurable outcomes and authentic service.
Dolphin Estate Association: Local Partnership
The Dolphin Estate Association's support enabled community access. By providing the venue and helping mobilize residents, they demonstrated the critical role of local leadership in successful community interventions. Their trust in AYVI's youth-led approach opened doors for deeper community engagement.
Rotary Club Ikoyi: Local Partnership
By embodying ‘Service above Self,’ the club demonstrated this principle throughout the event, rallying its members to take an active role in organizing it. The club President led by example, engaging directly with community members. Additionally, the Founder of AYVI, a Rotarian, garnered extensive support from her Rotary colleagues.
AYVI: Youth Mobilization and Coordination
AYVI's role was to bring these partners together and execute flawlessly. Our Growth Cadre volunteers proved that young people aren't just beneficiaries of development programs—they're capable implementers of complex, multi-stakeholder community projects. This event showcased AYVI's unique value proposition: youth who can organize, coordinate, and deliver measurable impact.

Community Testimonials
The true measure of success came in the voices of those we served.
Mrs. Adebisi, 62, retired teacher:Â "I haven't been able to read my Bible properly in over three years. I initially thought it was due to old age and that there was nothing I could do. Today, they gave me reading glasses, and I can see clearly again! I read an entire page without struggling. These young people and their partners have given me back something precious."
Ijeoma, 31, young mother:Â "I brought my elderly mother for screening, but the team encouraged me to get checked too. I discovered I had early signs of astigmatism that could have gotten worse. They gave me exercises and referred me for follow-up. Catching this early means I can protect my vision for years to come. Thank you!"
Pastor Emmanuel, 58, community leader:Â "What impressed me most was seeing these young AYVI volunteers coordinate everything so professionally. They treated every person with respect, managed the crowd efficiently, and worked seamlessly with the medical team. This is the kind of youth leadership our nation needs. I'm proud of what happened in our community today."
These stories represent hundreds more—each person who walked away seeing more clearly, feeling cared for, and knowing that their community values their wellbeing.
Looking Forward: Future Opportunities
